It seems that the Gradle compile fails in a Bazaar checkout but not in a Git clone of the Subversion repository.
The code in both working trees is identical. (Proved by writing a shell
script to find all the diffs.)
I don't see how a compile can behave differently of all the working tree
files are the same.
