I also use IntelliJ. But the auto formatting of the xml editor does not always format things in the way I want. Therefore I use auto formatting only for selected snippets.
We might be able to create an auto-formatting that suits us with Intellij, by customizing Code Style/XML. Moving the user's guide to its own subproject would confine this customization only to the user's guide XML.
