Certainly that would be the ideal. However this isn't practical with the project I'm working on--multiple teams of people working on multiple interconnected projects with nobody very concerned with versioning other than making sure everything builds and runs. This is compounded by the fact that we're currently using Maven and my Gradle build is sort of a proof of concept using the gradle-m2metadata plugin.
I figure that any improvements I can make to Gradle based on this effort will be more widely useful, so I'm making pull requests made for things I'm able to fix/improve.
