Hello,

I am working on the documentation of Impress version 3.0.0 and I was trying
to write something about the contents of the status bur, and I have found
some problems trying to figure out what the information in the left-most
section is.

Do you know the status bar in Draw? You might have a look in chapter 1 of the Draw Guide. The status bar in Impress it similar.

When a text box is selected, the status bar shows:
TextEdit: Paragraph %a, Row %z, Column %s

That is not precise. It depends whether the text box is in object mode (green handle) or in edit mode. "TextEdit" is shown in edit mode.

When a graphic object is selected instead, the status bar shows:
%O selected
(or maybe %0, not quite sure).

It shows the exact type of the object. So you can see the difference between a classical rectangle (showing "Rectangle selected") and a custom shape rectangle (showing "Shape selected"), both in object mode. If you have named the object, it shows this name in addition.

You need this feature for example when traverse through objects which lay over others.

So my question: is this work in progress? (in which case maybe it would be
better not to show anything at all) or is the information useful?

As far as I know there is currently no work on the status bar. The status bar works fine. It is a very great information tool.

Concerning the left field some additional hints: If you do something with the selected graphic object with the mouse, for example drag the corner of a classical rectangle, the left field shows the relative amount of changes. For the "new" custom shapes it is not so verbose, but only tells "resize".

For objects in "object mode" it shows the relative movment when dragging with the mouse, being in "rotate mode" the relative angle. For polylines in "point mode" it tells you how many points are selected, for dragging the control points of Bézier curves it shows relative changes in x- and y-values and absolute values of length and angle.

Play a little bit and you will see a lot of information in that field.

Do you need help on the other fields too?

kind regards
Regina
