Thorsten pointed me to this list on the IRC as a way to check on a
bug in the PDF import extension. Most of the PDF content that we
receive is unfortunately scanned, and this content currently loads into
OpenOffice in reverse (white on black) as seen here:

The workaround is to invert the image after which it looks and works
perfectly. I know that other bugs have been reported, but this one
issue would allow us to substantially increase usage of the filter
immediately. It also will allow us not to buy many more copies of Adobe
Acrobat Pro.
I appreciate any updates, since I am not on the list you will have to
respond to me directly.
