3.1 was the first version with across-the-place AA, so, err,
where did you get AA before, and no longer since 3.1?
16bpp is still direct color, so in theory it should work with AA as
well, and at least I vaguely recall that it worked with gdiplus on
Win32 back in the day when I tried it on slideshow. 256 colors (i.e.
palette mode) will not work, and is most definitely not worth the
effort anyway.
Thanks for your answer. In fact this is a question from somebody
offering an online (through a virtual desktop) version of OOo [1].
Since 3.1 all the fonts are aliased and the AA option is unavailable
(grayed). He thought that this may be caused by the fact that to reduce
bandwidth usage, he changed to 16 bit colors. His solution works both
for Linux and Windows.
