Looks like the problem is fixed in asciidoctor-gradle-plugin:1.5.3 (master currently using 1.5.2). I tested 1.5.3 and it works with the latest jdk9 snapshot release (ea+106), but it seems to add some odd headings in tables. Haven't had time to look into it.
