I pulled the latest directory-ldap-api into my guacamole tonight and modified the ldap ext pom.xml to use 2.0.0.AM3-SNAPSHOT. The issue has disappeared and 20 or so login attempts went through without any issue. I'll check again tomorrow when the campus is very busy, but from what I can tell maybe something in the newer source code fixed the issue.
