Of course. I'm sure that a lot of scholarly research ideas are in
Apache Hama project. For examples,

 * Advanced partitioning algorithms for distributing workloads of
graph or matrix computations.
 * High-performance scientific computing with GPGPU and InfiniBand on
Hadoop and Hama.
 * and, network science, math algorithms.
