You probably want to use the "struct" module:

In [3]: struct.unpack(">q", "\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x05")
Out[3]: (5,)
In [4]: struct.pack(">q", 5)
Out[4]: '\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x05'
