best way to get HBase version from coprocessor?

What's the best/recommended way of getting the HBase version during 
coprocessor execution? Should I get the "hbase.defaults.for.version" 
through the RegionCoprocessorEnvironment and check the value? Or will 
this not necessarily be reliable?
