Got this from a Colin message this afternoon:
"There are HDFS statistics that HBase could be checking by calling
DFSInputStream#getReadStatistics. This tells you how many of your reads have
been remote, local, short-circuit, etc. You could file an HBase JIRA for them
to roll those up into the HBase stats. Seems like a good idea to me."
