I have read the design doc, I agree that that's the correct way to approach
this, even though
that includes a lot of work not directly related to asynfs (like read
support)

Was there specific pushback against the last attempt, or has that just
fizzled out due to lack of interest/reviews ?
I did not find discussions on the ticket.
