How about some stand-alone apps that use HttpClient?
E.g. something like wget or curl (but obviously not all their
functionality)
These would be good as examples, and could help show if any parts of
the documentation need tweaking.
While a wget or curl java clone would certainly be useful, I am not sure if
recreating an existing application would make for an exiting summer project
(girls & alcohol should win by a great margin imo).
How about
(1) embedded HTTP server based on HttpCore?
If that handles SSL it could be useful for JMeter - could form the
basis of a new proxy recorder.

Would you be willing to act as a co-mentor (backup mentor), if we
proposed this as a project idea?
Otherwise, given there are no better ideas, we will not be participating
at all.
Oleg
(2) taking first stab at an async version of HttpClient?
Oleg
PS: not sure these could beat girls & alcohol either

Adding (optional?) built-in transfer-encoding support?
