Environment: apache proxypass to iis with httpclient jar running in php

as a test I set up an apache server to do a proxypass and proxypassreverse to
the iis site that has php that runs httpclient and it works great (both systems
are on same network)..
but when I went to our internet server and did a proxypass and proxypassreverse
to the same iis site via a crossover cable.. the php pages work.. but when I
try to connect the httpclient it just sits there until it times out.. it can't
connect..
no firewall is running.. I don't understand it.. is it still using port 80.. is
it somehow trying to connect to a different path than the one listed in the
proxypass? any ideas?
