[~colebq] We are not going to fix anything other than major protocol violations
and security issues in the 4.x branch going forward.
I am going to close this issue as WONTFIX but you are still welcome to raise a
PR at the GitHub with the proposed changes. I promise the PR will get reviewed
and merged in as long as there are no API visible changes.
