Edward Capriolo commented on HIVE-23:
-------------------------------------

I like how pig tries to connect to HDFS and JT and fires off a status message.
Should we do the same?

> Hive should fail to start if it cannot get an instance of the filesystem

> Hey,
> If I try to start Hive without my HDFS instance running, and Hive isn't able
> to start it up on its own, it should fail. Instead, I get a working Hive
> shell, but any query returns
> FAILED: Unknown exception : null
> FAILED: Unknown exception : null
> If I check "/tmp/{user.name}/hive.log", the error shows that the fs object
> was never assigned correctly, resulting in an NPE when it is referenced:
> 2008-10-29 17:01:08,659 ERROR ql.Driver (SessionState.java:printError(242)) -
> FAILED: Unknown exception : null

> Either the error message needs to be more informative or Hive should fail if
> it can't find the persistent store it needs. I can imagine wanting to run the
> Hive shell against the metastore only, so perhaps straight failure without
> the fs isn't the best option. Up to the Hive team.
> Regards,
> Jeff
