Statement.updateQuery() returns Method Not Supported exception

When our software sends a CREATE TABLE command to HIVE via JDBC, a
Statement.updateQuery() statement is issued which results in a Method Not
Supported exception. We did not get this error in the previous version of Hive
(0.7.1). Please advise, did something change within the 0.8 JDBC driver, is a
statement like this no longer supported?
