Yes, of course; I now see the issue. My sincerest apologies for belaboring an 
invalid point :(

In the interest of supporting as many users as possible, patch v3 seems the 
most prudent approach, with a note about deferring back to HBase methods once 
Hive moves on to 0.98.0.
