Description:
This method seems to be called with illegal parameters from time to time.
HIVE-3945 is one example and google shows more. This patch adds a better
exception.
I thought about also adding a log statement but I'm not too sure about that. On
the other hand the exception message might be swallowed...open for suggestions.
