What version of macos 10.1.4 sed do you have ?
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 31804 Jul 10 02:19 /usr/bin/sed
I just tried on another machine with
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 31200 Feb 3 03:59 /usr/bin/sed
and that machine seems happier.
