I have not found a real solution yet, and it seems that my posting to
 comp.unix.solaris didn't make it.

However, I have a preliminary solution: upgrading gcc from 2.95.3 to
 3.3.2 made everything work.

The problem is that I don't trust the stability of code generated with
gcc 3.x on Solaris, and it is well possible that an upgrade of any
component of the web server system (apache, mod_ssl, mm, mod_layout,
mod_dav, php ...) breaks something. I have had such problems in the past,
 especially with the combo apache/mod_ssl/openssl.
