However, I have a preliminary solution: upgrading gcc from 2.95.3 to 3.3.2 made everything work. The problem is that I don't trust the stability of code generated with gcc 3.x on Solaris, and it is well possible that an upgrade of any component of the web server system (apache, mod_ssl, mm, mod_layout, mod_dav, php ...) breaks something. I have had such problems in the past, especially with the combo apache/mod_ssl/openssl.
