Sorry, you may feel more comfortable checking out -r APACHE_2_0_BRANCH, since 2.1 restructures an number of modules. See the docs/manual/ within the 2.1 current development branch to get a slightly better handle on this. The mod_ssl problem you point out is a broken build - shmht was completed yanked (today) in favor of shmcb - so if you care to submit a quick patch to remove those references causing you grief, that would be terrific.
