Chris - your conceptual map looks well thought out, although I have yet to review the proposed patch. Any changes to the walk usually require a solid 40 hour of uninterrupted review for me to get a complete handle on the net effect of the proposed state (this is why it has evolved to have several unintended effects [read: bugs] - because I simply haven't had a chance to do a through review for some time.) It so happens I'm starting one of those cycles again right now with the changes to the mis-handling of file matches that Nick(?) corrected in trunk, and I'll study your patch in tandem.
