Thank you for contributing! As Rüdiger already points out, we want patches to go into the development trunk <http://svn.apache.org/repos/ asf/httpd/httpd/trunk> first, and they are backported after a vote. You can see this process at work by tracking commits to the STATUS file in the branches.

Also, what's more expensive, running the extra code, or the extra stat () given that you are already calling stat() a lot with AllowOverride enabled? I agree it's bogus to treat "index.html" as a directory, but it's a valid directory name!
