Hello Rob and welcome to the Ignite community. Unfortunately the project is quite large and it does take some time to get familiar. I think you should start the old-fashioned way by setting a break point on the public API and tracing it all the way through.
I also think that some tickets on the community page ( https://ignite.incubator.apache.org/community.html) are quite easy to start, e.g. IGNITE-396 or IGNITE-485 as they have to do with migration of the code from the sliding windows to Ignite Cache eviction policies. Perhaps you can start with those and then continue to the more difficult ones. Please feel free to ask any questions here.
