IMPALA-14988 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-14988> doesn't verify certs by default; IMPALA-15007 <https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15007> would, and should be in a 5.0 release. I don't see any significant breaking changes to impala-shell in the master branch. It does drop Python 2 support and moves to Python 3.6 as the minimum, but those are all EOL at this point.
