Hadoop 2.6+ offers its own api for Inotify events.

This functionality is still being develop and has some "problems" for now:
1. HDFS events are passed back to client instead of a specific directory or
file.
2. New APIs are only exposed to Hadoop superuser.
Any other suggestion on how to watch a HDFS directory?
