No, that does not apply.

Strictly, I download the sources and, starting with the core, change into the 
unzipped directory and work from there.

I don't make any mistake with starting in the wrong directory (we use maven to 
manage our projects at work). 

As best as I can guess, either we have a transient triangle of 
interdependencies deeper in the graph, or Maven only does a shallow dependency 
walk (then optimistically tries downloading), i.e. Maven doesn't try hard 
enough to figure out that it will build the sought for dependency, later on.
