re last commit on removing commons-logging: found now why we had it in place as 
a dependency ...

spring-core brings in
 
{noformat}
 <groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
 <artifactId>spring-jcl</artifactId>
{noformat}

which has all the commons-logging classes. So any Spring Boot powered up also 
needs spring-jcl.
