yes it does, you have to enable SSL and TLS. I haven't tested the data store implementation with gmail. uploading large files isn't fun using an ADSL connection...
hmmm, so far I thought google prohibits these kind of uses with a gmail account. but looking at [1] and [2] it seems like using gmail as external storage it not prohibited. though, I'm not sure if that means it is OK.
