Improve repository startup performance

It would be nice to include also a repository startup performance test to the
benchmark suite we have in test/performance. With that I believe we should be
able to identify some potential areas of improvement. The startup doesn't need
to be blazing-fast, but a sub-second startup time would still be nice.
