At a quick glance, seems to that this assertion check was added in 3.6.2. It
does not exist in 3.6.0 or 3.6.1. When this test is ran in 3.6.1, a NPE is
generated, so my guess is that the assert was added to protect against that
situation. Needs more investigation.
