I see. At least with Oak we didn't release off trunk immediately after the 1.6 branch. The branch was created some time in February and the first 1.7.x release was done in May. IIRC this didn't cause any issue.
Anyway, I'm OK with a 2.17.0 release, I just didn't understand the reason behind it.
