Correction - the package still fails but in a slightly different spot and
therefore didn't return on the specific grep for the exception - still
reverting this commit does change how things are failing and the commit
introduces a behavioral change without option to force the old behavior if it
causes trouble. (the root cause of the vanishing node seems to be related to
the observed issues with exclude & include patterns that I'm still trying to
isolate)
