I get the very same build failure on a clean build of Cactus' trunk:

org.codehaus.plexus.util.DirectoryScanner.scan(DirectoryScanner.java:
using Maven 2.2.1 and "mvn clean install" after a fresh checkout - so
the problem is not a Gump problem.
Is there any way to fix it?
