This has been discussed and we should avoid upgrading dependencies in minor/patch versions.
1.8.0 has already been released and upgrading Gson in 1.8.1 can break existing integrations (not the jclouds code, but upgrading Gson in the environment where jclouds runs may not be an option for our users). Unless there are concrete critical issues that are addressed I think we should not backport it.
