Samuel Croset commented on JENA-482:
------------------------------------
Thanks for the feedback! I've experienced in an improved version that you can
see there: http://loopasam.github.io/jena-doc2/
What has been done:
- Upgrade to Bootstrap 3, just released, so no needs to touch the design
anymore for a longtime hopefully. The site is mobile friendly (not so important
for Jena - but works great!)
- Improved secondary navigation based on Ian's comments. I've added a bar as
suggested on the top of pages (breadcrumbs), so users can navigate more easely
between related topics.
See differences yourself:
- Current one http://jena.apache.org/documentation/tdb/assembler.html
- Staging one: http://jena.staging.apache.org/documentation/tdb/assembler.html
- New one: http://loopasam.github.io/jena-doc2/documentation/tdb/assembler.html
The user has direct access to the more generic categories and context in a
concise way. A problem is that the bar stays on the top, but we could re-put it
at the end of each page too. Ian, what do you think?
- I didn't keep the "Download Now" button as I'm not sure how useful it is in
practice. Using Jena requires a bit of setting and installation, so I think
it's better to focus the redirect to a "get started" page more detailed than
the one there is currently. The new user would get a link for download and a
few words on this page; I'm working on it. (There's also a download link in the
menu for the really impatient ones!)
- If the version number is included somewhere in the website, it means that
committers have to take care of updating it too, but it's nice as it shows that
progress are being made and that the framework is alive.
- I have removed these features by default for the moment but it's easy to add
them back, just tell me.
If you have other comments/feedback/concerns let me know!
Cheers,
Samuel

> I've been experimenting a bit in the last couple of days over the Jena
> website and documentation. You can see a live demo version of the result
> here: http://loopasam.github.io/jena-doc/index.html
> My motivation was to try to make the overall browsing experience a bit
> clearer and nicer looking without disrupting too much what's already in place.
> I have refactored some of the skeleton and CSS using Twitter Bootstrap. I
> haven't changed any of the build mechanism (ASF-CMS), so pretty much all the
> documents and pages are working just as before out of the box.
> Before doing more work on this I wanted to know what the community thinks of
> it and whether it could be integrated with the current code.
