more info:
Load average minimal (just Thunderbird frantically indexing email)
"netstat --tcp" shows 579 connections all involving port 3535, the test
port.
And they don't all got away immediately when maven exits - things need
to timeout.

I was using:
java version "1.6.0_27"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.12.6)
(6b27-1.12.6-1ubuntu0.13.04.2)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)
I have now tried with
java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)
and get the same hang.
