@afs See my latest commit-- after thinking a little more carefully about
what I needed, I went with a single plain old `Lock`. It's clear, simple and
concise. No polling, no timeouts, all deterministic and efficient. Sometimes
the old ways are the best ways. I have a tendency to get too fancy too fast.
