I have a TODO to write something on this, but AFAIK there's nothing
comprehensive. By JRuby gem, do you mean a gem that has compiled Java
code in it? The quirks are really the structure of the Java jar file,
and the conventions in it. Every thing else is just compiling the
java code, jarring it up, including it in the gem structure, and
creating the gem (whether you use hoe or something else to do it).
You could look at AR-JDBC as an example -- it's probably pretty close
to best practice, but could still be cleaned up and templatized a bit.
Basically, I want a walkthrough that could bring a good Java developer
with no experience with gems or JRuby internals up to the point of
making a gem. It's for the GlassFish guys, who are on board to try to
make a GlassFish/Grizzly gem...so the sooner the better.
