Title: JRuby: Ruby for the JVM (should we have someting flashier?)

Short descrip:

JRuby has really arrived, with a 1.0 release last spring and accelerating real-world adoption. We'll talk about the status of JRuby, demonstrate performance and features, show off NetBeans Ruby support, and talk about where to go from here.

Long descrip:

Two years ago, JRuby's compatibility was so poor, it couldn't run IRB. Its performance was 100 times slower than Matz's Ruby, and had remained largely unchanged for almost four years. Nobody believed it could ever run Rails; not even those of us on the JRuby team. But we always hoped.

Fast forward to the present. JRuby not only runs Rails, it runs Rails so well many companies are switching to JRuby for their production applications. Performance has improved tremendously, and JRuby is now the fastest 1.8-compatible Ruby implementation around. Add to that continued improvements integrating with the Java platform and Java libraries, and you've got a powerful tool. JRuby has arrived.

We'll demonstrate the most compelling JRuby features, from Java integration to performance to running "plain old Ruby code". We'll show how JRuby improves the Rails development experience using standard Java technologies with a Ruby twist. We'll show the best-in-class features of the NetBeans Ruby IDE, including refactoring, debugging, and Rails application support. And we'll talk about (and ask your opinions on) where JRuby will go from here. There will be something for everybody.
