Fixed in r6597. Thanks so much to Peter for finding this effect. We're a lot better for it, and it has given me some insight into how to solve remaining thread safety issues in the call site and improve performance overall.
FWIW, I added a not-altogether-reliable test for this effect in test/test_thread.rb (at the bottom). Improvements are welcome. It failed regularly for me without the patch, but it's hard to make it 100%.
