Along with fixing SuffixType to be protected instead of private, a few other
methods and members could be opened up. This would allow better integration
for the VFSLoadService I'm working on, and less copy/paste code duplication.
Patch created against 1.3.1, but easy to read. I'll try to prepare a patch
against 1.4RC2 soon.
