Home key does not get handled correctly in irb or rails console

When in irb or rails console the Home key does not send the cursor to the
beginning of the line. Same with the End key. In MRI and REE the key commands
are handled correctly, and the cursor moves like expected. Enebo and I tried
$TERM set to vt100 and xterm which made no difference.
As a side, Ctrl-a and Ctrl-e do work in MRI, REE and JRuby for moving to the
beginning and end of a line. Enebo thinks that "whatever is being sent to
jruby/java is not understanding the sequence".
