RSpec 2.4 seems to run specs very slowly in JRuby

I'm not sure what's going on here, but try running rake spec:ji with RSpec 2.4
under JRuby. You'll notice a few things:
* Output appears to be buffered. This makes it look slow.
* Some specs take *forever* to run. It seems like RSpec may be spinning up new
JRuby instances for each one?
We need to resolve this. Others have complained, and I don't blame them
