We do pretty well on this pure-Ruby ragel parser, but I'd like to see us do
better.

His numbers put us about on par with Ruby 1.9, and mine put us slightly behind.
Being slightly behind 1.9 tells me there's room for improvement, since Ruby
code generally runs comfortably faster than 1.9 in most cases.
