Dave,

Txs for the additional info -- the ajax call should indeed return a set of 
search matches.

I do not see why the ajax response is not successful;  it is the same url as 
the one used by the default template.

Could you check the NETWORK tab in the browser console : it provides more 
details on the ajax XMLHTTPRequest and error codes ?
