Dave Koelmeyer commented on JSPWIKI-895:
----------------------------------------
Hi Dirk,
Not only does it look odd, it severely negatively impacts the quality of
printed output, and is several backwards steps from, say, the Plain Vanilla
skin which generally renders very nicely to hard copy. See for example page 4
of [http://www.apertura.co.nz/whitepapers/APWiki.pdf]. In its present state, I
would not want to distribute hard copy printouts from JSPWiki with Haddock
enabled.
Automatic generation of underlying URLs sounds like a good idea in theory, in
practice results in a mess. In this regard, there is equally very little gain
to be had above not including underlying URLs by default. At very the least, as
I've rapidly found out, it's a waste of paper – as printed documents are longer
than they need to be to account for the extra lines.
If users wish to include URL information in printouts, this simply needs to be
at the user's discretion and factored in when they formatting the page –
*exactly* the same as if one prints a LibreOffice Writer document which may
also contain web links (which are also not converted to the underlying address
by default). The method used in Haddock seems to be indiscriminate, resulting
in URL information printed where there is zero benefit advantage (I don't need
to see the URL of the user who modified the page, or the URL of the page title
for example, but this is also inserted in the print view).
URLs commonly are also quite lengthy, which is another reason I would think not
to have them automatically inserted for printing. I could go on, but in short I
find this a very confusing design decision. While not a bug, it's certainly an
issue of some sort.

> With the Haddock template enabled, a page containing regular internal links
> encased in square brackets will, when printed out, display with the
> underlying URL.
