Hi all, I believe I've found a bug in the Java consumer in kafka-clients 4.1 to 4.3.1. A consumer using subscribe(SubscriptionPattern) stops sending Metadata requests for good once a topic assigned to it is deleted. The client throws *an *`IllegalStateException`*: "Use errorsByTopicId() when managing topic using topic id"*, here <https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/4.3.1/clients/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/common/requests/MetadataResponse.java#L99> , and after that, it never picks up new topics matching the pattern and heartbeats until restarted.
I have a reproduction and have traced the cause, but I haven't been able to file it yet. My ASF Jira account request (15th Oct) is still awaiting approval. Thanks, James Palmer Conduktor
